Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was assassinated on Friday in what experts are calling a major blow to Iran’s nuclear program.

The scientist, who was of extreme importance to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and even considered a quote “mastermind”, had been highly protected by the country after a slew of assassinations of other nuclear scientists over the years. But Fakhrizadeh was of particular importance compared to the others.

Iran is blaming Israel for the killing and vowing quote “severe revenge”, but who actually carried out the plot is currently unknown.

The scientist was head of the research center of new technology in the elite Revolutionary Guards, and was killed in his car while traveling east of Tehran.
