Ethiopia Claims Victory in Tigray Conflict After Shelling Region’s Capital

Ethiopia claimed victory in its conflict with the restive region of Tigray on Saturday, after a daylong series of artillery strikes against the regional capital, a city of half a million people.

Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) have taken control of Mekelle, the capital of the country's Tigray region, according to a tweet from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The city was under fierce bombardment earlier on Saturday, a humanitarian source on the ground and eyewitnesses who have fled the city told CNN.

Federal police will continue working to round up members of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). Thousands of Northern Command officers held by the TPLF have now been released, according to Abiy.

Ethiopian forces “started hitting with heavy weaponry and artillery the center of Mekelle,” the local government said in a statement to Tigrayan media.

The shelling started midday on Saturday, with local television suddenly going static. A humanitarian official reported that no one could see federal forces as the attack commenced.

The conflict already raised humanitarian concerns, with around 40,000 people having already fled the area prior to the military closing in.
