Four of the muses are sitting around and discussing their roles in inspiration.
Polyhymnia opens the discussion saying that all inspiration, in the end comes from Zeus.
Euterpe and Erato both agree, and they add that there is more to life than the worship
of the Gods, and that even Zeus would probably agree, and insist upon that. They
continue to go back and forth, when Terpsichore, who had been silent to this point, gets
up and begins to dance to the beat of an unseen drum (Zeus?). They all join her and
Apollo appears and dances with them. When the dance ends, Terpsichore says,
“Remember the dance too!” They all realize that each of them has as a role to play
in the creative process. Polyhymnia ends the discussion, reminding them in the final
analysis, it is through the benevolence of Zeus that they are there, and all the
others nod in agreement.
