Feeding Oregon Pastured Pigs in the Forest
Sasquatch raises his pastured pigs a bit differently than most small family pig farms. Instead of traditional pasture, our heritage breed pigs free range in the forests of Oregon's Coast Range. The underbrush of the regrowth forest is thick with blackberries, briars, English ivy - an invasive species, and my personal nemesis . . . poison oak.
Sasquatch loves thinking up crazy ideas of how to raise pastured pigs in the forest. So Sasquatch feeds his pigs whole peas and whole wheat in the middle of the forest. The pastured pigs eat up their natural feed and clear the underbrush. The whole peas and wheat naturally start to regrow where the pastured pigs cleared, helping reduce erosion while growing more natural feed for the pigs.
Sasquatch does not mind the extra work required to raise pastured pigs in their natural environment. It is all part of raising our Natural, Ethical, and Sustainable Glory to God Hogs.
