Message In A Bottle - The Police (Cover)

This is one of those songs that I heard when I younger, and didn't connect to lyrically, but it griped me in my Being. Perhaps I was already lonely, unable to verbalize what I was feeling, and riding on a similar frequency to Sting.

As I have become older, I now believe that, on some level, we all know what he was talking about. We've all been in a room full of people, yet felt absolutely not consoled by the company. We have been placed in a mental prison (Though, mercifully, it is less permanent than it feels at the time). It is a solitude that pervades deeply, in a place that no one else can penetrate: The depths of our minds.

On some level, the upbeat nature of the chorus betrays how horrifying the continual realization of loneliness is. The juxtaposition of punk and reggae a novel and curious sensation. I imagine their shows to be hot, sweaty, and probably full of "vibes".

In any case, I have endeavored to recreate the song mostly faithfully, and inserting my artistic interpretation only as much as I felt absolutely compelled to. I hope that the little bit of my own personal expression adds to what everyone already knows and thinks of this tune, one that has been with me since before I knew how to describe loneliness. Since before I had considered that "a hundred billion castaways" could only be hyperbole, articulated so that we could imagine the depths of his relief to know the truth. . .

You are not alone.
