Jeemak 10" LED Ring Light Kit
Ring lighting is widely used in professional photography and film making for the softening effect it has on the skin, reducing wrinkles and smoothing out imperfections. This new £29.99 ring lighting kit from Jeemak is not the cheapest out there but has better build quality than most rivals and comes closer to feeling like a serious piece of photographic equipment,
In the robust branded box is the 10″ USB powered ring light, mini tripod, flexible gooseneck phone mount, ball and socket tripod mount, Bluetooth remote control with a CR2 battery, carry bag and a user guide for both the remote control and ring light. Build quality seems fine for the price. The ring light feels a little flimsy, although less so than most others I have tried, but works well enough, the gooseneck mount and ball and socket mount are made from robust metal with the phone mount from tough plastic. Treat the ring light with care but otherwise, all seems robust and well made.
Usage is simple enough. For portraits fit the ring light to the tripod using the ball and socket mount, and screw the gooseneck to the inside fitting of the ring light and position the phone upright and forward of the light for best effect. Alternatively, the phone can be mounted on the mini tripod and a separate tripod used for the ring light. Of course, the ring light does not need to be used with a phone, I use it as a fill light with my video camera and it works well in any small studio situation. Being USB powered means it can even be used outdoors with a power bank.
The unit is powered through USB and has an in-line backlit control pod which scrolls through the three Colour Temperature settings (3300K, 4000K, 6500K), the ten brightness levels, and Off/On. The lighting ring is quite lightweight and is unlikely to survive a severe impact, but that aside seems fine.
The Bluetooth 4.0 remote has proper clicky buttons and worked reliably, well for me and was quick and easy to pair, although all it does it take a photo or start/end video recording. This remote again feels better made than those supplied with other kits. It has two buttons, one on the side for power, the other on the front to trigger the shutter. I was pleased to see a CR2032 button battery was included in the set. Look for the Bluetooth device AB Shutter3 and pair it to your phone.
This budget-priced kit can be used for selfies, in beauty or hair salons where precise lighting is required or for general photographic or video use. It would make a nice gift for anyone with an interest in any of those activities or for a YouTuber or Tik Toker.
