So much of what we believe as Christians is linked to the use of words. God called the universe into existence saying "Let there be light" in Genesis and we are CALLED to spread the WORD of Christ to our brothers and sisters around the world. Christianity is, in fact, the most persecuted religion in the world even though those of us in majority Christian countries forget about this in our everyday lives. Despite the very clear evidence of 2,000 years of the persecution of Christians all over the world, most people in the West only remember the times that Christianity was used as a weapon against others.

The Inquisition is one of the darkest moments in Christian History. Giordano Bruno was a rogue priest and heretic philosopher with some very interesting ideas about the universe. Some of these ideas were visionary and some were a little nuts but none of these ideas deserved to be censored. Bruno was sentenced to burn at the stake for stubbornly refusing to recant his ideas after seven long years in prison making him the unofficial "patron saint" of freedom of speech. His story should serve as a warning to all of us about how the oppressed can become the oppressors- a message more relevant than ever in our modern world.
