911 Call and Body Cam: Fatal Officer Involved Shooting of Mark Matthew Bender Jr

Police in San Bernardino, Calif., launched an investigation this week after an officer Thursday fatally shot a man outside of a convenience store.

The San Bernardino Police Department said in a statement that police responded to a call late Thursday because a man was allegedly jumping on vehicles outside of a convenience store in the California city.

Police said the man, Mark Matthew Bender Jr., 35, did not listen to officers who approached him and attempted to enter the store.

“The responding officer identified himself and ordered the suspect to show his hands. The suspect clearly ignored the officer and walked away from him, saying he was going to the store,” police said in a Friday statement. “The officer noticed several patrons and employees inside of the convenience store and attempted to detain the suspect before he entered, to prevent him from harming anyone inside.

In graphic footage from the incident, an officer can be seen with his arms wrapped around Bender as the two struggle on the ground. The man stood up as he allegedly pulled a handgun from his pocket, and the office shot at him four times.

Bender was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Friday that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Law enforcement officials said a semi-automatic handgun was located at the scene of the shooting.

The officer was not immediately identified by law enforcement officials.
