Demonstrators in France honor teacher beheaded after discussing Prophet Muhammad cartoons

Demonstrators took to the streets of French locales Sunday lauding free speech and decrying violence against educators after the slaying of a teacher who used caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad during a lesson.Show more

Thousands gathered in and around Paris' Place de la République, some holding signs showing the front page of Charlie Hebdo -- a satirical magazine targeted by extremists after showing cartoons of the prophet -- while others lofted placards, saying, "No to Islamisation" and "Nazislamisation is cutting our throats."

Samuel Paty was beheaded on Friday by an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee who was shot dead by police.

Anti-terrorism prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said an investigation for murder with a suspected terrorist motive was opened.

At least four of those detained are family members of the attacker, who had been granted 10-year residency in France as a refugee in March, was armed with a knife and an airsoft gun, which fires plastic pellets.

French authorities, meanwhile, say they have detained an 11th person following the killing.

The primary response to the attack includes the deportation of 231 foreigners in the File of Alerts for the Prevention of Terrorist Attacks (FSPRT), which tracks radicalized activities, according to Europe 1.
