Most folks are just not leftist or rightist. The majority of folks are somewhere in between

That includes both people in political office, and those voting for them.

Moreover, those voting, will often have certain issues at the top of their list in terms of importance. An example might be what's considered being pro-life.

Even though the person may be otherwise liberal in their views (which, as I've said, is not a good descriptor, since liberal means one thing in one place and another elsewhere), they may choose to support a supposedly conservative person, based on expectations they'll support that cause.

On top of that, they may have to accept someone who's less desirable because the person they would choose, if they knew they could win primaries (much less,, the actual election), won't.
