WWII Tallboy bomb explodes in canal in Poland

A huge bomb dropped by Britain during World War II has exploded after being discovered in a canal in Poland.

The Tallboy, also known as an “earthquake” bomb, weighed 12,000 pounds when it was dropped by the Royal Air Force during the final months of the war.

More than 750 people had been evacuated from the area near the Piast Canal outside the town of Swinoujscie where the Tallboy bomb used by Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was found.

It weighed nearly 12,000 lbs, including almost 5,300 lbs of explosive.

Polish Navy demolition experts were in the process of trying to make the 21-foot bomb safe by a process of deflagration, meaning that, using a remote device, the weapon was being exposed to heat to burn away the explosives.

The shockwave from the detonation of what remained of the bomb’s 5,200 pounds of Torpex explosive filling rapidly engulfed the channel, demonstrating how the weapon’s “earthquake” effect was designed to destroy targets even without scoring a direct hit.

The ministry spokesperson told CNN that no injuries or damages were reported, adding: “Every step of operation was under control.”
