What are negative rights? That's question for which I'm sure many people have no answer.

In this video, discuss that idea as a sort of companion to a blog post I wrote yesterday.

The simple answer is, negative rights essentially tell folks what they can not do.

That may sound odd, but the idea is used like this. The first amendment to the United States Constitution intentionally starts with the phrase, "Congress shall make no law..." The purpose of that statement, is to express a negative right. Essentially, "the U.S. legislative body may not do this thing."
