SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town - Morning rounds at the Groote Schuur Hospital trauma wards (Video) (RYp)
South Africa - Cape Town - 13 October 2019 - We join Professor Andrew Nicol and his team on his morning rounds at the Groote Schuur Hospital trauma wards. Professor Andrew Nicol (MBChB, FCS(SA), PhD) is the Director of the Groote Schuur Hospital Trauma Centre and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Cape Town. Speaking at a press conference earlier in the year Health MEC, Nomafrench Mbombo, said there had been a 100% increase in patients presenting with gunshot wounds at the Groote Schuur Hospital over the past eight years. They now see an average of 73 gunshot wound cases a month, about a quarter of which are return patients. This has led to special surgical techniques, which were developed to deal with severely injured patients, called Damage control surgery being adopted.
