There are those who would argue that America was a colonizing or empire building entity. Among them, would be Dr Noam Chomsky in his book, "Understanding Power, The Indispensable Chomsky".

You can watch this video, or read the related blog post to see why I don't count this to be the case.

I'll accept that the U.S. has interfered in the governmental affairs of other countries as a function of foreign policy, but not that they did so in order to try to colonize other countries, or add them to some sort of empire.
