Heritage food feature. A koeksister is a popular South African confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup, like a sticky doughnut. Koeksisters are wickedly sweet and make for a delicious tea time treat. Ouma Rooi Koeksisters is based in Maitland, Cape Town and has another factory in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. They fry more than 45 000 individually handmade koeksisters daily, and they have more than 55 employees of which the majority are women. Video: Henk Kruger/African News Agency (ANA)
