Heritage food feature. A koeksister is a popular South African confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup, like a sticky doughnut. Koeksisters are wickedly sweet and make for a delicious tea time treat. Ouma Rooi Koeksisters is based in Maitland, Cape Town and has another factory in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. Â They fry more than 45 000 individually handmade koeksisters daily, and they have more than 55 employees of which the majority are women. Video: Henk Kruger/African News Agency (ANA)
