Researchers may have found a way to prevent people from developing Type 1 diabetes.
Scientists at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology made the announcement on Wednesday.
According to UPI, the process involved is called neuroimmunology.
Neuroimmunology effectively blocks nerve signals that cause the body's immune system to attack insulin-producing cells.
Researches say that devices can be made that influence nerve function locally by using electrical impulses.
The potential preventative treatments based on the findings are several years away from being used.
