Cataracts are a cloudy film that covers the eyes causing vision problems.
While usually associated with old age, anyone can get cataracts. They are thought to be caused by overexposure to the sun or diabetes. Outpatient surgery is now a standard procedure and the only way to actually remove cataracts once they have formed. There are some herbs, however, that are helpful in improving vision and eye function.
Bilberry - These berries are thought to improve vision and protect the eyes from disease. The fruits of the bilberry contain antioxidant ingredients that can help prevent clouding of the eyes. Used in capsule form, take up to three capsules per day.
Rosemary - A common herb used in cooking, rosemary contains powerful antioxidants that may help retard the growth of cataracts. Take rosemary as a tea, mixing with lemon balm. Drink at least one cup of hot tea per day.
Turmeric - Turmeric has a high concentration of antioxidants, especially the top three known to help prevent cataracts, vitamins A, C and E. Take up to three 500-milligram capsules per day or use a tincture.
