Sheldon the videographer loves his birds. Living in a suburb of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada has given him the opportunity to have a home on two acres of land. Him, his wife and two daughters slowly began enjoying the farm life by purchasing some chickens. Soon there was the desire for more animals, and then came along goats. Goats led to pheasant, which are a small chicken size wild bird, which led to more pheasant. Staying positive after his pheasants flew away, a new pheasant was only a phone call away. Back home was more pheasant all was happy on the farm. Like most farmers, or animal lovers, one turns into two turns into ten. Visiting Sheldon is quite the pleasant and hilarious venture. Walking down his driveway and around the rear of his home towards a small barn, you will see chickens and goats sitting at the backyard table, just as though they were guests over for a summer barbecue. As I was saying, Sheldon continues to grow his farm animals, and next was something really out of the ordinary, an ostrich !!! Im sure you are thinking” who buys an ostrich? And where do you get one?” Well simply put, an ostrich farm. Knowing a guy that knows a guy is always helpful, with anything. In Sheldons case he knew someone that actually breeds and raises the ostrich from eggs right through to full grown and in turn sells them as a family business. Asking Sheldon what one of these huge birds is worth, he mentioned “ around $2500 each, and luckily enough I was able to get a mating pair so I will be able to gain some of the expense back.” Growing to over seven feet tall and weighing nearly 120 kilograms or 260 pounds, they are big. Able to run 70 kilometres per hour, or 45 miles per hour, you surely will not outrun one if he is mad at you. Eating mainly plant matter such as flowers ,weeds and whatever else they come across, they seem to constantly eat. If you are wondering how big their eggs are and could you eat one for breakfast, they are roughly 6 inches round and weigh in at 3 pounds. I hope you love eggs . They are very similar in taste to chicken eggs, but have a more buttery flavour but are more intense of a flavor. Wandering the farm while waiting for the owner to gather up his new ostrich, Sheldon wanted to see what would happen while standing just outside the birds pen. Watch and see just how friendly these huge birds are. Ostrich are definitely one of the giant birds of the earth.
