Virginia Governor Ralph Northam responded to widespread protests decrying racism.
This is after the death of George Floyd, a black man in police custody in Minneapolis.
He ordered on Thursday the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The status of Lee resided in the state’s capital city of Richmond.
He said the statue should be detached from its pedestal “as soon as possible”.
