WATCH: Peguins take over closed Chicago aquarium
These lucky penguins at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium don’t have to practice social distancing.
Staff are using the shuttered aquarium as a chance to give enrichment opportunities to the animals in new ways — including penguin field trips. The facility was forced to close after Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker ordered the shutdown of public events and gathering of more than 1,000 people.
Two of the aquarium's residents, Edward and Annie, a bonded pair of rockhopper penguins, have been allowed to wander around the empty halls of their home, checking out their neighbors. Since nesting season is coming up, Edward and Annie may be able to take advantage of this extra space for their future babies, possibly behind the information desk. Shedd Aquarium will be offering digital nesting coverage so that animal lovers can follow along.
Staff, who are on-hand 24/7, have been coming up with other creative ways to keep the animals engaged, including even taking suggestions from the public.
