Driver fails to yield, throws road rage tantrum and gets reprimanded

Every now and then we all make an error while driving. It happens to even the most conscientious motorist. It's especially hard to avoid at four way stops during busy times because not everybody agrees on what the rules are. And not everybody understands the laws. When traffic is lighter, it isn't so likely that this will matter, but when it gets congested, it becomes more important that people understand the order in which to proceed.
This four way stop is in a city in Ontario. The law here is the Ontario Highway Traffic Act which states that vehicles going straight have the right of way ahead of turning vehicles. Right turning motorists have the right of way over left turning motorists, and the vehicle to the right may proceed before the vehicle on the left. There is also a rule about vehicles stopping first having the right of way when the other rules don't differentiate between vehicles. The vehicle entering the intersection first will also have some right of way if the other rules don’t override this.

The only confusing time is when four vehicles are at the intersection at the same time, as in this case. But watching the scene carefully, there are four reasons why the white van has the right of way over the red car.

The white van is going straight while the red car is making a left turn. The white van is to the right of the red car. The white van arrived first, stopped first, and began to proceed first. For whatever reason, the driver did hesitate slightly, which caused some confusion. But he still has the right of way for those four reasons. As the red car starts to go, the white van also continues moving.

It's surprising that the driver of the car tried to go first, but that would be completely forgivable if she had simply stopped accelerating when the white van was in front of her. Instead, she became enraged and kept accelerating. She honked angrily while he swerved to the right to avoid being hit.

The driver of the car behind had a dash cam and he watched this with interest. He noticed that the red car was tailgating the van and honking angrily even a block away. As he pulled up, he noticed that it was a woman in the red car and she had her window down, seemingly getting ready to yell at the driver of the white van.

Having some knowledge about the Highway Traffic Act, he thought she should be told that she had no reason to be angry with the driver in front. But she had no interest in hearing about the law and she began giving this spectator the middle finger with both hands and a very animated, and uncomplimentary facial expression. Having no interest in a debate, the spectator offered one final opinion and drove off. Predictably, the woman in the red car swore at him in disapproval. Perhaps she will figure out that acting with such hostility is inappropriate, especially when you are in the wrong.
