The Las Vegas City Council approved a new ordinance that establishes a city misdemeanor charge of battery which constitutes domestic violence. It does not bar the suspect from having a gun, but it would ensure cases are heard in a timely manner by a jury. The charge has the same mandatory minimum sentence as the previous domestic violence charge. On a third charge, the accused could have their gun taken away if convicted of a felony. Remember, you can get help during any domestic violence situation. SafeNest has a 24-hour text and call hotline at 702-646-4981. You can also chat online. To learn more visit SafeNest.org.
