Scuba diver can't resist funny antics in fast flowing river
Brad is a serious diver with serious skills. He has completed many advanced courses and instructed hundreds of groups on their way to becoming accomplished divers. He has dived in oceans all around the world in very varied conditions. He is also very comfortable in strong current, such as the one on this dive in the Niagara River, just above the world famous Niagara Falls. What he does in this video would not be recommended for someone without lots of experience.
Brad hinted at the fact that the current would carry a person along the bottom so quickly that they would be able to leap and bound, or even run along the bottom if they were on their feet, so it should not have been such a shock that he had a plan to demonstrate this. But it was a complete surprise for Dave who was recording the dive on his first adventure in the Niagara River. Brad's dive partners are also accomplished divers and are well prepared for the unusual. In fact, Trevor, who is drifting behind Brad is another dive instructor himself. This may have been part of the reason that Brad felt comfortable removing his fins and giving them his "superhero imitation".
Brad is known for his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh, so the moment that Brad looked into the camera and nodded his head, Dave knew some sort of show was about to begin. A diver who laughs under water inhales more air and he becomes more buoyant. This caused Dave to start floating toward the surface, making it harder to keep Brad in the video. As he struggled to watch the show, Dave was also struggling to keep his regulator in his mouth. Nobody would expect antics like this as you "fly" over the river bed.
With the Canada/United States border almost directly under your feet, Brad might have been imagining himself as Canada Man, or he might have been thinking Captain America. Just slightly to his right is the imaginary line between the two countries.
The river flows much faster than a strong person can swim and the drift dive is all about maintaining your position as the river carries you rapidly forward. Rocks, logs, fish, and plants appear in front of a diver and then they are gone very quickly. It creates the sensation of flying as a scuba diver zips along. Zebra mussels have taken over large sections of the river bed and made the bottom look like a smooth, white and grey beach. It was flying over one of these shell sections that gave Brad his inspiration to remove his fins and perform his routine.
Brad is living proof that you can have fun during even the serious moments in life!
Brad and his wife, Tammy, run a dive shop in Burlington called Float n' Flag. They are serious about service and and even more serious about having fun. When they are not in the store looking after customers, they are usually underwater somewhere. If you get a chance to dive with them, you will no doubt get more than you expected in every way possible.
