A woman has launched a campaign calling for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to drop the word ‘colored’ from its name.

Delia Gray, 45, is on a “one-woman crusade” to persuade the prominent civil rights organization to ditch the “demeaning” term.

Home health attendant Delia said: “As a black American, I detest being referred to as a ‘colored person.'

“The phrase is demeaning, demoralizing, and just plain disrespectful."

When the NAACP was founded in 1909, the word ‘colored’ was commonly used to refer to black people.
