Most poisonous fish has amazing camouflage abilities
Scorpion fish are one of the most deadly fish in the sea. Also known as rockfish or stonefish, they carry an extremely deadly venom within their spines. The spines which are much like hypodermic needles, are located along the back of the fish. These very camouflaging fish, also have brilliant colours on the underside of their fins. When feeling threatened the scorpionfish will flutter its colourful fins to warn the predator to stay away. Venom sacks half way down the length of each spine, carry enough venom that if stepped on, can kill a human. Scorpionfish are bottom-dwelling fish that have also been called rockfish or stonefish because of their tendency to live among rocks near the seafloor.
There are more than 200 known species of scorpionfish in the ocean. Members of this fish family are commonly found in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans where water temperatures are temperate and coral reefs are plentiful. Being nocturnal predators, the scorpionfish generally lies motionless during daylight hours in the sand of the ocean floor or within rock crevices. Having a wide mouth, they can suck in unsuspecting small fish if they happen to come within striking distance of the scorpionfish even during the daytime. Most scorpionfish species are less than two feet in size and have a lifespan of 15 years. A female scorpionfish may release upwards of 15,000 eggs into the water for fertilization by the males. Fertilized eggs float to the surface and after just two days the eggs will hatch. The newly hatched scorpionfish will remain at the surface until they grow large enough to swim down into the coral reefs. There they will begin eating and growing at a fast rate. Having few predators other than some sharks, rays and large snapper, the scorpionfish numbers can grow rapidly. Living mostly near the surface in shallow areas, they can also be found in waters up to 2,625 feet (800 m) deep. If stung by the scorpionfish, one must seek medical attention promptly to have an anti-venom injection as their venom is highly toxic and can cause death to a human. If stung, the best first aid to perform is to soak the sting area, be it a foot or hand, in hot water and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Never remove spines that may have broken off and still be in the wound site. Always be safe and aware.
