Hundreds of firefighters battled on Saturday to rein in wildfires in southern France, as a stifling heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures to parts of Europe. According to Reuters, the oppressive heat has so far killed at least three people in Italy. France’s highest temperature on record was registered on Friday in the Gard region, at 114 degrees Fahrenheit. There, emergency services said scores of fires burned some roughly 1,500 acres of land and destroyed several houses and vehicles.
