While on their honeymoon, these newlyweds got the shock of their life during a hike through Mount Dumpling in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Coming straight for them, was a Grizzly bear. They calmly moved off the trail and were extremely relieved, yet shaken, that the bear passed them without incident. The grizzly bear also known as the North American brown bear is a large population of the brown bear inhabiting North America. On average bears near the coast tend to be larger while inland grizzlies tend to be smaller.

Unlike the smaller black bears, adult grizzlies do not climb trees well and respond to danger by standing their ground and warding off their attackers. Mothers defending cubs are the most prone to aggressive, and are responsible for 80% of humans killed by grizzlies. Grizzly bears generally avoid interaction with people. If you are attacked by a brown/grizzly bear leave pack on and act as DEAD. Lay flat on your stomach with hands clasped behind the neck. Spread legs to make it tougher for the bear to turn you over. Stay still until the bear leaves the area. It can be up to 8 feet tall when it stands on back feet. Although grizzly bears are large animals, 70% of their diet is contained of berries, leaves and nuts. They also like to eat fish, rodents and moose.

A black bear's first line of defense is retreat, but grizzlies, especially sows with cubs, can be very aggressive towards other bears and people they perceive as threats. Grizzlies are not expert tree climbers, though it's significant to note that they can climb trees. Most informed cases of man-eaters have involved lions, tigers, leopards, and crocodiles. Though, they are by no means the only predators that will attack humans if given the chance; a wide range of species have also been known to accept humans as normal prey, including bears, Komodo dragons and hyenas.

Black bears only attack when confronted by human being and typically limit themselves to making mock charges, emitting gusting noises and striking the crushed. However, according to Stephen H. in his Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance, 23 people were murdered by black bears from 1900 to 1980. Grizzly bears are omnivores, and their food can vary widely. They may eat seeds, berries, roots, grasses, fungi, deer, elk, fish, dead animals and pests. In the late summer and early fall, grizzlies enter hibernation, a period of 2 to 4 months when they deepen their calorie intake to put on weight for winter.
