Adnan Syed's attorneys granted more time to appeal to U.S. Supreme Court
Earlier this year, the man at the center of the popular podcast “Serial“ was denied a new trial by Maryland's highest court. Now the United States Supreme Court is giving Adnan Syed's attorney more time to appeal that decision. Syed's attorneys now have until Aug. 19. to petition the court and hear the case. The nation’s highest judicial bench Syed's last hope after exhausting his options in Maryland following the April ruling by the state’s Court of Appeals. In that decision judges voted 4 to 3 to not to grant Syed a new trial.. Attorney Justin Brown originally filed a motion questioning whether Syed had a sufficient defense at his trial nearly two decades ago. Syed is serving life in prison in Western Maryland after being convicted of killing his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee, while they were both students at Woodlawn High School. As for this extension on the appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, Maryland's Attorney General Brian Frosh did not comment. Frosh’s office has defended the state through Syed's appeal process. The story of Syed’s conviction was the focus of the first season of ’Serial,’ the most popular podcast ever. The show’s wild popularity arguably helped usher in a wave of serialized, true crime story telling, particularly in podcast and on streaming video services. The case was also a recent feature of a documentary series on HBO.
