On Tuesday June 18th a 10-year-old child was put into medically induced coma after a horrific car crash caused by a teenage Quebec driver allegedly texting. The accident occurred in the suburbs of Mercier on boulevard Saint-Jean Baptiste (route 138), the central thoroughfare in the South Shore municipality. Doctors said the boy is in critical but stable condition with substantial internal bleeding. Two other women in the car that was hit suffered serious injuries.
Authorities are weighing criminal charges if they find direct proof that the 18-year-old was on their phone. Drivers talking on the phone while driving are 4 times more likely to get in an accident and 8 times more likely when texting. Using a cell phone or another portable electronic device while driving, automatically leads to fines, which have doubled since 2017 from $300-$600 to $480-$1,034.
