According to Reuters, acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan announced his withdrawal from consideration to head the U.S. military. The announcement comes as reports of domestic violence in his family have surfaced. Shanahan said he made the decision to prevent his three children from reliving “a traumatic chapter in our family life.” President Donald Trump said the secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, will be named as the new acting defense secretary.
