According to Reuters, the Justice Department has formally asked the United Kingdom to extradite Julian Assange to the United States.
The founder of WikiLeaks faces 17 charges in the US, including a violation of an espionage statue.
Assange was previously indicted by the US government for conspiring to hack computer systems with Chelsea Manning, a former US soldier.
