Quebec Increases Minimum Wage

This week minimum wage shot up. From 12.00, to 12:50 an hour, this jump will affect
nearly 290,000 people across the province. These measures are being taken to
increase purchasing power and provide a boost to the economy, but many unions
and community groups still believe anything less than $15/h is not enough to afford a
decent lifestyle. I’m here in downtown Montreal today, to talk to people about the
minimum wage.
While many of the employees affected by the hike are students still living at home,
it’s not such smooth sailing for everyone. According to statistics Canada, on
average, about 30% of the country’s workforce in the minimum wage industry are
people aged 35 and up.
Last year, workers got a 75 cent hike to $12.00, while we’ve seen Alberta hit $15 and
Ontario hit $14. In Saskatuan, you can go as low as 11.06 for each hour you sweat.
Global news reports that this boost can come to an extra $400 to $650 a year,
depending on the worker.
