If you want to cut back on sugar in your diet, reducing the amount of ultra-processed may be the way to go.
According to Mother Nature Network, many foods that people consider to be healthy, are actually processed.
This can include frozen vegetables, steel cut oats, organic extra virgin olive oil and peanuts only peanut butter.
MNN says that the trick is learning the definition of ultra-processed foods.
A 2016 study published in the medical journal BMJ Open describes ultra-processed foods as "...industrial formulations which, besides salt, sugar, oils and fats, include substances not used in culinary preparations."
This includes "...particular additives used to imitate sensorial qualities of minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations."
