Using a labeled complementary DNA, RNA or modified nucleic acids strand (i.e., probe), In Situ Hybridization (ISH) refers to localize a specific DNA or RNA sequence in a portion or section of tissue. This is a crucial step for understanding the organization, regulation, and function of genes. Another important histology technique of localization is immunohistochemistry; however, immunohistochemistry stains proteins instead of DNA or RNAs.
