In a scene that briefly resembled a Great Depression-style run on a bank, dozens of customers demanded their cash back from Metro Bank in London on Saturday.
According to Business Insider, the run on the bank came after reading false rumors on WhatsApp that the bank was going under.
The information was entirely false. UK bank accounts are guaranteed by the Bank of England.
Metro Bank's stock dropped 9% Monday morning.
The episode shows how difficult it is to counter fake news circulating inside WhatsApp's private, encrypted environment.
