"Mission: Impossible" writer and director Christopher McQuarrie pitched the idea of making two movies as the follow up sequels. McQuarrie told Empire he now has to justify why it's two films. He said you have to "earn that." The director said he is "freaked out" about making the back-to-back sequels that are meant to come out in 2021 and 2022.
