Aretha Franklin passed away on Aug. 16, 2018 but she is still being honored for her contribution to society. On April 15, 2019, the artist won the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation honor. According to SFGate, Franklin is the first individual woman to earn a special citation prize. The Pulitzer board said she won the award because of her contribution to American music and culture. In the past, she was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
