Gizmodo reports a new study suggests climate change caused Neanderthals to turn to cannibalism out of desperation. New research published this week in the Journal of Archaeological Science suggests cannibalism became widespread during the Last Interglacial Period, also known as the Eemian period, between 128,000 to 114,000 years ago. Global temperatures at the time rose to about 2 degrees Celsius higher than the average global temperature in the 20th century.
