Have you ever seen a cat active? Well, there are some cats who are active but they are rare. When cats are young, they are curious about the world and will always find something new to do. But as cats grow older, they tend to get bored easily and just sleep around in whatever place they could find. Some cats can sleep for an average of fifteen hours a day and there are some who can even sleep up to twenty hours in a twenty-four-hour day. So this fact raises a question which is why do cats sleep so much? Well, there are some good answers to this.

First thing you should know is that cats are crepuscular animals They are most active during the time frame between dusk and dawn. So to be active during that time frame, cats sleep mostly during the day. But cats also have the physiology of a predator. Which means they have this wild animal instinct of chase and hunt. You can see this kind of behavior in action with a lion or a tiger who are cousins of our lazy domestic cats. Just like lions, house cats also show other wild behavior like creeping out of a dark place and slow walking towards anything that catches their attention.

As hunting or should I say running behind a catnip toy consume an amazing amount of energy, house cats are always in energy saving mode.

There are some other factors as well which makes a cat fall in sleep, like the weather. Cats have been observed to be sleeping more during cold and rainy days. Just like humans who like to snuggle in their bed during winter, cats also sleep more when the weather calls for it.

But these cute little beats are pretty intelligent. When they are sleeping, they are not actually sleeping. I know it sounds confusing so let me explain. Cats take quick naps, so they can either doze in a light sleep or sleep very deeply. A cats light sleep last for fifteen minutes to half an hour. But the deep sleep can also last for five minutes. While they are in light sleep, they can spring any minute for action at a moment’s notice.

This is the answer to your question. But let us take a look at this video of this cute cat who is trying to fight sleep. The cute cat is trying to go against nature's rule but the sleep will take over it anyway.
