Mother dog milk feeding her puppies
When your dog starts to nurse her puppies, she has higher nutritional needs compared during pregnancy. While her puppies are growing, you will observe that your dog will eat more times than normal. She has to eat the right food with the right amount in order to sustain the nutrition of her puppies. So as a dog owner, you should be able to help a dog produce more milk for her puppies.
Understanding A Nursing Dog
The very first milk that a mother dog produces and feed her puppies is called colostrum. This is very important since it contains the essential nutrients, vitamins, electrolytes, and antibodies that her puppy needs. Like humans, this milk produced within 24 hours after giving birth will help the puppies develop a stronger immune system.
After your dog gives birth to her new puppies, you’ll observe that she will drop some weight. Because she starts to nurse her pups, you should double or triple the food you are giving to her in order to maintain her nutrient and caloric needs. Keep in mind that the quality of food you give will help a dog produce more milk for her puppies.
Tips On Stimulating Milk Production
As long as your dog has a normal health, she will be producing milk for her litter. However, you can also help a dog produce more milk for her puppies especially if your dog produced a lot of puppies.
1. For you to help a dog produce more milk for her puppies, make sure that your dog has access to fresh and clean water. This is the first step for a better lactation. Fresh water could be cold, warm, or lukewarm. Observe what your nursing dog prefers better.
5. Make sure that your dog’s daily meal is comprised of at least 17% of fat.
6. You can give your nursing dog leafy vegetables, carrots, pumpkins, beans, organ meat, yogurt, eggs, cheese, fatty fish, and raw meaty bones. A balanced diet is very important during nursing to help a dog produce more milk for her puppies. Like humans, a lactating dog needs the proper kind of nutrient she requires when feeding her pups.
7. You can give a nursing dog performance dog food due to the energy requirement they need. Most of these performance dog foods contain high levels of fat and calories.
8. Vegetable oil, olive oil, lard, and grease can also provide your dog high levels of calories.
9. When giving a nursing dog food supplements, consider supplements that contain iron, manganese, copper, folic acid, zinc, and selenium.
10. You can give your nursing dog treats that are nutritious which includes fresh fruits, cheddar cheese, non-sugary jerky, dried beef, sweet potatoes, meatballs, eggs, and chicken.
