River is a rescued puppy who has found a new home. She has been here two months but she has not yet figured out how to deal with Mitzy, a bossy and moody cat. River knows that her breakfast is waiting in her bowl but Mitzy is sniffing it and pacing around between River and the food. Mitzy is looking friendly and harmless, but River has learned not to trust cats. At least, she has learned not to trust this one. Mitzy will occasionally approach River, and even Briva, the family great Dane, as if she wants affection. But if the dogs look at her wrong, she suddenly turns grumpy and growls in disapproval. River may be wise not to test Mitzy. But this is the first time that Mitzy has gotten in the way of breakfast and River is struggling with what to do.

River wants the food, but she doesn't want an argument, so she hangs her head and waits. When she thinks it's all clear, she steps forward, but she freezes when Mitzy looks at her again. Mitzy's breakfast is also being set out so the problem is quickly resolved, but River still looks suspiciously over her shoulder a few times to make sure that Mitzy is gone before she moves in on the food.

River is a gentle and lovable dog who is one year old. She was moments from death after being brought to an emergency veterinary clinic two days before Christmas. Her family had provided her with all the love and care that a dog could want, but they received the news that day that her health problems would be expensive and extremely complicated to treat. It would be virtually impossible to manage her symptoms and give her a quality life. They made the heart breaking decision to end her suffering and they said their goodbyes. River was moments from her final breath when Serena, a veterinary assistant at the clinic, had an idea. Her mother is a veterinarian and the two of them together have the expertise and resources to give River a decent chance of successful treatment. They could provide the frequent tests and manage the medications that River was going to need. Serena explained her plan and River's owners were more than happy to see her have a second chance at life. With very mixed emotions, they said goodbye, knowing that she was in capable hands.

River is now feeling much better, although she was diagnosed with a very complicated heart condition that will require surgery in the coming months. Meanwhile, she is enjoying the good life, with lots of love and affection from her new family. River is a beautiful soul who truly deserved this opportunity.
