IMPD officers shoot unarmed wanted man while trying to take him into custody

Indianapolis, IN - Indianapolis police are investigating after officers shot and injured a man while trying to take him into custody.

Indianapolis Metro police officers were called just before 6 p.m. Thursday to the 900 block of Grant Avenue for an active investigation into a wanted male. This is a residential area near the intersection of 10th Street and Sherman Drive.

According to IMPD, officers were searching for a suspect wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon, robbery and questioning by child abuse detectives. Officers arrived and surrounded a garage with the man inside.

Officials said they then gave “loud verbal commands” for the suspect to “peacefully surrender.” The suspect reportedly cooperated with police at first, walking towards them with his hands raised.

However, officers said he then paused and, after a brief conversation, reached for his waistband and tried to run. At least one officer then used their stun gun, while another fired a gunshot. The suspect then reportedly fell to the ground a short distance away.

Police said the man then reached for his waistband again, with officers then firing another shot. In total, three officers fired their weapons.

The suspect then received medical aid from officers before being taken to a local hospital in serious condition. No weapon was located on the suspect or in the surrounding area.

IMPD said no officers were injured. Police said all relevant people are accounted for and that there is no outstanding threat to the public.
