The most compelling evidence points to the Sphinx being eroded primarily by rainfall, not desert wind. That kind of deep vertical weathering requires a far wetter climate than the one Egypt has had for the last 5,000 years.
The last period with sustained heavy rainfall in Giza ended around 7,000–10,000 BCE, and possibly even earlier, which suggests the core body of the Sphinx predates the dynastic Egyptians by several millennia.
