India Withdraws Order for Mandatory Cybersecurity App Preinstallation

1. India’s telecom ministry has reversed its directive requiring all new smartphones to preinstall a government cybersecurity app.
2. The original mandate demanded the “Sanchar Saathi” app be added to all new devices within ninety days.
3. Manufacturers were also instructed to prevent users from disabling or removing the government’s cybersecurity app.
4. The ministry’s rollback follows pushback from smartphone makers and privacy advocates concerned about user rights.
