Citizen Lockout: UK Policing and Justice

On December 2, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy outlined the Government's proposed reforms for 'triable either-way' offences like theft, fraud, or affray, where sentences would likely be three years or less in England and Wales. A judge alone would decide guilt, bypassing juries to tackle the 78,000-case backlog in England and Wales Crown Courts.

Critics call it an erosion of Magna Carta-era rights, while the Government insists speed serves victims without affecting serious crimes like murder or rape.

Is this correct?

Has the Government gone too far, scrapping a fundamental legal right?

If any of us were wrongly accused of sexual assault at a christmas party, would we rather be trialled by a single judge or a jury of people from a variety of backgrounds?

Will this fix the case backlog? Probably not and how did we get to this point?

Perhaps this is a sign of the times where there are more ordinary, law abiding citizens accused of crimes, investigated under the Terrorism Act, or arrested unlawfully.

In 2023–24, the UK arrested 35,000 people for online posts—more than China, Russia and Belarus combined.

There is no doubt that policing and justice and its administration are under serious pressure in the UK. How much of it is due to Government incompetence and poor policy and administration - just Look at how the asylum and border policies have been mishandled, exposing communities to unnecessary hardship and risks.
