COP-30: Fernando Gabeira on Journalism, Microplastics, and Global Sustainability
In this COP-30 interview, participants of the ALLATRA International Public Movement speak with renowned Brazilian public figure and journalist Fernando Gabeira, a man whose life reflects courage, integrity, and a deep commitment to environmental issues. His personal journey stands as an inspiring story of resilience, creativity, and an unwavering search for truth.
Fernando Gabeira was born in 1941 in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. From a young age, he developed a passion for journalism and writing. After moving to Rio de Janeiro, he worked at one of Brazil’s leading newspapers, Jornal do Brasil.
Following years of exile, during which he lived in several countries, including Sweden, where he worked in radio, Gabeira eventually returned home with a renewed perspective and fresh ideas. He turned to literature, authoring several significant and thought-provoking books, including O Que É Isso, Companheiro?, a vivid memoir about his life, experiences, and return to Brazil.
Gabeira also became an outspoken advocate for environmental protection and sustainable development. He was one of the founders of Brazil’s Green Party and made a substantial contribution to the advancement of environmental and humanistic thought in the country.
Throughout his work, he blends sharp journalistic insight with literary depth and genuine empathy. His writing and projects reflect a profound respect for people, nature, and the future. After returning to Brazil, Gabeira continued his public service and was elected to the Federal Congress, where he championed environmental awareness and civic responsibility.
His life is a story not merely of survival, but of deliberate choice. He has never hesitated to think independently, defend freedom, challenge established norms, and inspire others to see the world differently.
In this COP-30 interview, Gabeira shares his deep perspective on the role of the media in shaping environmental awareness, why microplastics have become an issue that extends far beyond traditional ecological concerns, and why open dialogue is essential for a sustainable future.
This video offers a rare opportunity to hear from someone whose wisdom, sincerity, and intellectual vitality make him a powerful and inspiring voice in today’s global conversation about our planet.
