Criticize Israel? New Hate SPeech Bill Threatens Free Speech

Congress is moving fast to expand “hate speech” laws — and this time, it’s aimed directly at schools and universities.

Representative Randy Fine, who previously pushed antisemitism bills in Florida (HB 741 signed in Jerusalem, and HB 187 in 2024), has now introduced HR 6186: The No Antisemitism in Education Act. This bill would force federally funded schools to treat antisemitism exactly like racial discrimination, using the IHRA definition — including its controversial “examples” that blur the line between harassment and political speech.

That means ordinary statements like:
“Israel’s settlement expansion violates international law”
“Israel’s policies resemble apartheid”
“Our university should divest from companies tied to Israel’s military”
…could now be treated as discrimination.

At the same time, Congress has launched a nationwide investigation into antisemitism in schools, targeting districts from California to Pennsylvania. Real harassment must be condemned — but pairing these sweeping probes with HR 6186 risks turning protected speech into punishable offenses.

Charlie Kirk opposed a similar bill, HR 6090 (2024), calling it “blatantly unconstitutional and an attack on free speech.” He was right. HR 6186 is the next step in federalizing speech codes.
