SUDAN LEADER REJECTS US-BACKED PEACE PLAN

In rejecting a US-backed peace plan, Sudan's army chief Abdulfattah Al Burhan accused the US's Sudan envoy, Massad Boulos, of echoing the positions of the UAE, which backs the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia at war with Sudan. Al Burhan, who also heads Sudan's sovereign council, said that Boulos' truce proposal was the "worst one submitted," as it proposes the "dismantling of Sudan's armed forces".
Sudan's army is the primary resistance to the UAE's attempt to control Sudan's land via its proxy RSF militia, actively perpetrating g*nocidal campaigns across the country. As a result, the UAE invests heavily in the collapse of the Sudanese army, and by extension, the Sudanese state.
Despite this, the UAE, alongside the US, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, is part of a four-member mediating group known as the Quad. Al Burhan questioned how the Quad can include the UAE as a mediator, given its sponsorship of a militia that openly vows to destroy the Sudanese state and has filmed its own massacres.

While the UAE's lack of neutrality with regards to the war in Sudan is already common knowledge, Al Burhan's speech also raises questions about whether the US is as neutral as it claims, or whether its peace proposals come with the terms and conditions of its Emirati allies… at the expense of the will of a Sudanese people who can no longer coexist with a militia that has committed unspeakable and unforgivable atrocities.

It's worth remembering that, until the start of the war, RSF leader Hemedti served as Burhan’s deputy on the sovereign council, and both participated in the October 2021 coup that brought Sudan’s democratic transition to an end. So while most of Sudan supports Al-Burhan, given that he leads the state army against a foreign-backed militia, he is still blamed for contributing to the current crisis.
