Arlu, scientifically known as Ailanthus excelsa, is a well-recognized medicinal tree in Ayurveda, valued for its extensive therapeutic properties. Commonly found in India’s dry deciduous forests, #Aralu is a large, fast-growing tree whose bark, leaves, and roots are used in traditional #remedies. Its #Sanskrit name Aralu and regional names such as #Maharukh reflect its long-standing cultural and medicinal importance.
The bark of Aralu is the most commonly used part and is known for its anti-inflammatory, #digestive, and antimicrobial qualities. In Ayurvedic practice, Aralu is classified as having bitter (tikta) and pungent (katu) taste, with light and dry qualities, and is believed to help balance #Kapha and #Vata #doshas. It is often used to alleviate conditions associated with excess mucus, sluggish digestion, and inflammation.
Traditionally, Aralu bark is used to treat fever, diarrhea, dysentery, and respiratory issues such as cough and bronchitis. It is also used as a supportive herb in cancer care. Its expectorant and bronchodilatory properties make it beneficial for clearing the respiratory tract. The herb is also known to stimulate appetite, improve digestion, and act as a mild laxative, making it useful in managing constipation and indigestion. Additionally, Aralu is valued for its wound-healing and antiseptic effects, with poultices prepared from its leaves commonly applied to skin infections or injuries.
Modern herbal practices also acknowledge Aralu for its antioxidant and immunomodulatory potential, suggesting broader applications for supporting general wellness. Despite its benefits, Aralu should be used with guidance from a qualified practitioner, especially for pregnant women, nursing mothers, or individuals with chronic illness, as strong bitter herbs may not suit everyone.
Overall, Aralu (Ailanthus excelsa) stands out as a versatile and powerful herb, offering a wide range of therapeutic benefits while reflecting the depth and wisdom of Ayurvedic healing traditions.
